He is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (Faculty of Painting, diploma in 1955) and of Art History at the Jagiellonian University (diploma in 1954).

He has illustrated nearly two hundred books for children and adults published in Poland, as well as several dozen published abroad. He has also worked in stage design (Wilam Horzyca Theatre in Toruń, 1978) and designed tapestries (St. Stanisław Wyspiański Cooperative in Kraków). Nature—particularly animals—has been the primary inspiration for his work; since the 1980s, animals have become the main protagonists of his artistic narratives. Since the 1990s, he has also created so-called “spatial illustrations”: menageries constructed from wooden beams and sheet metal. He gained international recognition and has received numerous awards in Poland and abroad.

In 2004, he created a nativity scene consisting of 44 figures, which remains on display at the Camaldolese monastery complex in the Bielany Forest, near the campus of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. Until 2020, a live donkey named “Franek” lived next to the nativity scene; it is currently accompanied by a mule named “Franciszek II.”

At the turn of 2006 and 2007, he presented The Ark at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art—a bestiary made of wood and sheet metal, referencing the biblical Ark of Noah. Initially installed as a wall piece, the work was expanded in 2016 with side sections and a rear structure and placed on the grounds of a former manor farm, now part of the Radziejowice Palace and Park Complex. Another of the artist’s works, The Gate of the National Theatre, is also located there. This is the original gate of the National Theatre, saved from being scrapped by Bogumił Mrówczyński, then director of the Radziejowice Creative Work Centre, and entrusted to Józef Wilkoń for artistic transformation.

In December 2009, the Józef Wilkoń “Ark” Foundation was established (President: Blanka Wyszyńska-Walczak, born 1963). Its mission is “to protect and promote the artistic legacy of Józef Wilkoń and the broader values associated with the fine arts, with particular emphasis on illustration and book design.”

In 2016, the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes, a two-volume collector’s edition of The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha was published in the translation by Anna Ludwika Czerny and Zygmunt Czerny, featuring one hundred illustrations by Wilkoń. Its ceremonial premiere took place in October 2016 at the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of Polish Radio in Warsaw, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Culture and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain.

Between 2017 and 2019, a three-volume series of conversations between Wilkoń and Janusz Górski was published, forming a narrated autobiography of the artist: Mirror and a Ray of Light, The Rustle of Trees, and The Ark. This artistic and literary collaboration continued with The Alphabet of Wilkoń, published by Górski in 2021—a collection of the artist’s recollections about friends and acquaintances who, in the 1950s and 1960s—the golden era of Polish book art and poster design—worked as illustrators and graphic artists. The book includes social anecdotes, insights into artistic practice, and reflections on the publishing market during the communist era in Poland.

In October 2018, a mural based on Józef Wilkoń’s illustration The Ark with Animals was created on the wall of a building on Kościuszki Street in Piaseczno.

In September 2022, the Piaseczno City Council adopted a resolution establishing a municipal cultural institution named the Józef Wilkoń Museum of Contemporary Art in Piaseczno, planned to be located in the former fire station building at 3 Puławska Street. The museum is intended to present original works by the artist, promote contemporary art, and conduct educational activities.

In February 2025, during a ceremony at the Radziejowice Creative Work Centre, he celebrated a double jubilee: his 95th birthday and the 70th anniversary of his artistic career. The jubilee exhibition presented works from various periods of his career, including paintings from his student years, compositions created during plein-air sessions, and works from the Water Carriers and Self-Views series. The exhibition also featured tapestry designs—an important part of his oeuvre—as well as works never previously shown. Among the exhibited pieces was a series of digital illustrations created for his authorial book The Rebellious Electron, published in 2015.
',
                                            thumb_title : '
Jozef Wilkon
'
                                        },
                                                                            {
                                            image       : 'https://animal-film.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/p2-img-01.png',
                                            thumb       : 'https://animal-film.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/p2-img-01.png',
                                            title       : '
Ryszard Wiencek

',
                                            caption     : '
Ryszard Wiencek is a film editor, director and producer with more than thirty years of experience in documentary cinema, radio, television, and audiovisual projects for cultural institutions. He began his career in 1989 as a composer and producer, creating sound identities, jingles and commercials for major Polish radio stations. His background in sound design has profoundly shaped his later cinematic language.
Gradually shifting his focus from sound to image, he developed as an editor, cameraman and director, co-creating over thirty documentary films. His work concentrates on memory, identity, and the human relationship with nature, often taking hybrid forms that blur the border between documentary and narrative cinema. At the same time, he firmly rejects staging in documentary filmmaking, considering it a substitute for ideas rather than a creative tool.
From 2000 to 2005, he served as Festival Center Director of the Camerimage International Film Festival, overseeing the opening and closing ceremonies, the festival TV studio and the programme of events within the Festival Center. This period significantly shaped his international perspective and understanding of cinema as both an art form and a professional environment.
He has also created audiovisual projects for museums and cultural institutions, including the Polish Vodka Museum and the Józef Piłsudski Museum in Sulejówek, where he combined cinematic narrative with exhibition space.
He is currently the editor, director and CEO of Nowa Formacja, a Kraków-based company developing original documentary formats and commissioned projects.
The driving question of his work remains the boundary of documentary cinema: how far it can adopt the narrative tools of fiction without losing its identity. Each film is an attempt to answer this — not theoretically, but through form and storytelling. Rather than explaining, he seeks presence; rather than illustration, experience.
He lives and works in Kraków.
',
                                            thumb_title : '
Ryszard Wiencek
'
                                        },
                                                                            {
                                            image       : 'https://animal-film.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Ula00911376-scaled.jpg',
                                            thumb       : 'https://animal-film.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Ula00911376-scaled.jpg',
                                            title       : '
Urszula Dubowska

',
                                            caption     : '
She is a graduate of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Łódź (1981) and of the part-time Higher Vocational Programme in Television Production at the Łódź Film School (1994).
